Top 10 Reasons I Think Calorie Counting is for the Birds

This is going to be controversial. Some people will hail me as a champ for standing up and saying this. Others will want to stone me before burning my body at the stake.

First, I know calorie counting works. It’s simple science – burn more calories than you consume and you WILL lose weight.

The problem I have is that when you throw the human element into the equation, it just isn’t effective enough for my tastes. Here’s why:

1. Too technical – very few people are going to be able to keep track of everything that goes in their mouth, every day for the rest of their lives. And even if you could, why would you want to???

2. Relies way to heavily on will power to stay on top of how many calories you consume.

3. People convince themselves that they can forgo exercise and just starve themselves into weight loss.

4. Can be a catalyst for eating disorders when people start to obsess about calorie intake.

5. It REQUIRES you to obsess about calorie intake to make it work, thus leading to #4.

6. All calories are not equal. Where the calories come from makes a HUGE difference. Calorie counting seems to ignore this fact.

7. People consume “reduced calorie” and “diet” foods in order to make their calorie numbers work. These foods are WORSE for your health than the normal version.

8. Makes you feel guilty about “cheating” on your diet. We all know that negative reinforcement is not the best motivator.

9. People take the lazy way out and will often leave out the exercise portion of the equation.

10. Overlooks the fact that focusing on boosting your metabolism is easier and more sustainable than trying to live within overly restrictive calorie intake limits.
